SHAF Work Day at the historic Avey Farm

Approximately 30 members and supporters of the Save Historic Antietam Foundation gathered at the historic Avey farm on the southeast side of Sharpsburg for SHAF’s annual spring work day. Participants in the work day cleared vegetation and invasive species away from the historic structures to restore the landscape to its 1862 appearance.

At the beginning of the work day, Antietam Battlefield Guide and author Jim Rosebrock shared a brief battle history of the property with our volunteers.

SHAF partnered with the American Battlefield Trust, who owns the battlefield land, for this year’s spring work day. Thanks to all those who supported SHAF today!

Fall Antietam Work Day Scheduled

Our Fall Work Day will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, at the Reel farm (opposite the main entrance to the battlefield). We will be clearing small trees and brush along the eastern border of the property, along Rt. 65. We will be using hand tools ONLY and stacking up the small trees and brush to be disposed of later in the fall. There will also be some wire fences to remove, and tools for that will be provided. We will start at 9:00 a.m. and work until early afternoon. The rain date is Saturday, Nov. 12.

Please bring water, gloves, hand pruners, and/or saws, no chain saws please. Dress for the weather, of course. We will postpone if steady rain for the day is predicted within 24 hours before Saturday morning. Please watch our Facebook page and/or website, shaf.org for notices. Please park in the designated grass field opposite the temporary Visitor Center, a sign will be posted.

March 21 SHAF Work Day Update

We are well aware of the precautions being taken due to the coronavirus and the concern of it being spread through group interaction. We also are concerned that we have been piling branches from our tree cutting in places where a hay crop is growing, and we need to remove these piles so we do not interfere with the farmer harvesting the hay in these fields.

Therefore we have decided to continue with our Work Day this coming Saturday. As best we can, we will practice social distancing, no group photo, mostly we will be lining up to feed branches into a chipper and there is no need to get close to anyone else. We urge you to exercise any precautions you feel are appropriate. If you are in the group whose age and/or health issues make you vulnerable to the disease, please feel free to opt-out of attending.

If you do attend, please bring gloves, hearing protection, water, and please dress for the weather. We can use a few people Friday night to feed branches into the chipper, which will arrive at the site about 4:30 and we can work until dusk. Saturday morning we will begin around 8:30 and plan to work until 4:00. We usually get a large crowd in the morning and by early afternoon tales off to just a few people. Please feel free to stagger your participation by arriving later in the day, if that suits your schedule, so we can have enough people there all day long.

It is not necessary to let us know you’re attending, but it would be helpful.

Thank you.
