In conjunction with the National Park Service and American Battlefield Trust, Save Historic Antietam Foundation is working with the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources to replant the proper type of trees to restore these 12 acres to their war-time appearance. A 12-acre tract has recently been purchased by the ABT. This property is directly west of the Dunker Church and adjoins the NPS property. This ground was part of the original West Woods on Antietam Battlefield, historic ground of inestimable value. SHAF has pledged to help restore this property before it is transferred to the NPS. These 12 acres constituted the lower portion of the West Woods, and witnessed the back-and-forth fighting of Union and Confederate forces on September 17, 1862.

How can you help? SHAF is raising funds to implement this effort. Our plan is to place a plaque on the property to recognize donors who help us restore this property. We have been assured by the MD DNR will use historically accurate trees and will space them appropriately as well. If you can help us with this project we will place your name on this plaque. Donations will be $50 per tree, and you may “purchase’ as many trees as you like. Please send donations to SHAF, PO Box 550, Sharpsburg, MD 21782 or by Paypal or on our website www.shaf.org.

Be sure to include your name, or the person in whose name you are donating.

Thank you!
