Upcoming Boteler’s Ford and Shepherdstown Battlefield Tour

July 26, 2009

Ford the Potomac River at Boteler’s Ford and tour the Shepherdstown Battlefield on Saturday, September 19, 2009. SHAF president Tom Clemens and Tom McGrath, author of THE book on the battle, will lead the tours. The plan is for two crossings, one starting about 2:30 PM and another at 3:30 PM, in order to accommodate more participants. The event would then be opened to not just the members of Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association and Save Historic Antietam Foundation, but also the general public.

Col. Strong's horse

Antietam Witness

The number of dead horses was high. They lay, like the men, in all attitudes. One beautiful milk-white animal had died in so graceful a position that I wished for its photograph. Its legs were doubled under and its arched neck gracefully turned to one side, as if looking back to the ball-hole in its side. Until you got to it, it was hard to believe the horse was dead.
